How to buy a stethoscope (the short version)

Three rules from the floor:

  1. Match the scope to your setting. Nursing school through med-surg and post-acute: a mid-range dual-head (like the Classic III) is plenty. Cardiology, ICU, or advanced practice: step up to cardiology-grade acoustics.
  2. Budget for the long game. A $100 scope that lasts 5+ years costs less per year than a $25 scope you replace annually — and sounds better the whole time.
  3. Maintain it. Wipe the tubing, replace eartips every 6–12 months, and check the diaphragm. Most "dead" scopes just need $15 in parts.
